SBA is a Michigan 501(c)(7) non-profit organization.
It is powered by a team of dedicated volunteer board members, coaches, and parent/family supporters. Together, they uphold the mission of Shoreline Breakers Athletics by providing Christ-centered Homeschool athletic opportunities, organizing competitive programs for 5 -10 year olds with our Little Breakers program and Season play for girls and boys 10U through Varsity, and creating a positive, supportive environment for players to grow both on and off the court.

I’m a father of four and always seek to instill the positive work ethic into my own children that I learned from my parents. Having grown up on the soccer field, the tennis court, and in the gym, I learned early that disciplined training of the fundamentals and a willingness to “do the work” make a winning combination. Coaching is more than just sport-specific training, it is the formation of life skills that can be used to serve God and those around us.
Kel Riggs

This will be our family’s 5th season of involvement with the Shoreline Breakers.
My husband Jay and I have 2 sons,
Ayden & Alec.
We are each involved in different capacities with the Shoreline Breakers, making this a great family activity.
We are grateful for the opportunity to have a solid Christ-centered basketball program for homeschooled girls and boys along the Lakeshore.
The friendships that have developed and the opportunity to watch these players grow physically, spiritually and as a team continues to a true blessing.

We are a sports loving family and
are thankful to have this opportunity as homeschoolers to play a fun, competitive sport with other statewide and regional homeschool teams.
Daniel Hartley
Coaching Team
I love the game of basketball and have been blessed to enjoy the past four years of coaching SBA, including several seasons as head coach of the varsity team. I love the competition and the opportunity it provides to shape young athletes both on and off the court. One of my favorite Bible verses, 2 Timothy 2:15, reminds me of the importance of diligence and integrity. I strive to instill in every player. I believe in creating a purpose-driven team culture where excellence is the standard and love for teammates is shown through effort, sacrifice, and unity. My goal is to encourage each player to give their best not just for themselves, but for the good of the team.
Jacob Carpenter

I am the second oldest of ten siblings, which has shaped my leadership and team-first mindset. 2 of my younger brothers are on the Boys Varsity team which I regularly practice with and assistant coach.
Over the past few years, I have been actively involved with the Shoreline Breakers program as assistant coach for multiple teams and behind the scenes running tech.
I try to bring energy, encouragement, and a commitment to helping players grow both on and off the court.
Bear Dendel

Hi, I'm Ray “Bear” Dendel. I'm married to Sherrene and we have 2 children in the Breakers program. I've been around basketball most of my life, playing for the Kalamazoo homeschool program from about 11 through high school, then helping coach various church teams. I have been coaching in the Breakers program in various roles for a number of years. Outside of the Breakers, I'm heavily involved at church serving as a youth leader for over 20 years, as well as serving on various boards and serving on the tech team for over 30 years. God has developed me as a man and challenged me as I've lead the teams the last few years. My desire is to challenge the players as they grow, not only in basketball, but in life. But also have them challenge me to grow deeper in my walk.

Hi I’m James Deeren and I am happy to have the opportunity to be part of the SBA coach team.
I’m married to my wife Emily and we have 3 awesome kids. I’ve always loved basketball and now getting to share that love with my son and the rest of the team is super fun for me. I’m looking forward to working with the boys this year.
Heidi Harris

Hello, my name is Heidi Harris and I am excited to be coaching the youngest girls team this year. My husband and I have been married for 14 years and have three children (Barrington, Riley, & Simon Peter).
I currently am the children’s ministry director at Life Church and am an adjunct professor at Spring Arbor University. My professional background helps give me a foundation for coaching- I love teaching and especially love Jesus! Coaching in a faith-based organization gives us the opportunity to support the children to not only develop physically in the game but spiritually as well. Basketball is a game I have played and loved since I was very young and am eager to help build foundational skills with our youngest girls to develop as players and walk away loving the game as well!
We joined the Shoreline Breakers in 2023 as coaches for the boys10u team. We are grateful for the community here and are so excited for all three of our kiddos to be playing on a Breakers team this year!

I have played basketball since I was 4 years old. I played for the Shoreline Breakers for 6 years and am now part of the coaching team. I hope to have a positive impact and create solid team relationships with the players and encourage them to grow as teammate and friends of. Basketball is fun but it is work. Coaching is more than just telling players what to do, it's encouraging them to be better and do more than what they think they can do.
