Meet the Shoreline Breakers Athletics Team

Board & Coaches

SBA is a Michigan 501(c)(7) non-profit organization. It is powered by a team of dedicated volunteer board members, coaches, and parent/family supporters. Together, they uphold the mission of Shoreline Breakers Athletics by providing Christ-centered athletic opportunities, organizing competitive programs for youth from 10U through Varsity, and creating a positive, supportive environment for players to grow both on and off the court. The SBA team is committed to excellence, service, and community—building a legacy that goes far beyond the game.

Meet the SBA Team

Jamie Corliss, Board President

I’m married to my husband Abe Corliss and we have two boys who have been playing basketball with the Shoreline Breakers for 7 seasons. We are a sports loving family and are thankful to have this opportunity as homeschoolers to play a fun, competitive sport with other statewide and regional homeschool teams.

Shawn Doctor, Board Vice President

I am a devoted homeschooling mother of eight, all of whom have been part of the Shoreline Breakers program. I have been affiliated with the Breakers for over 23 years. I try to provide leadership that helps shape the team’s culture across generations. I love the family engagement and mentoring of young athletes that SBA programs provide, ensuring our kids grow not only as skilled players but as principled individuals grounded in integrity and purpose.

Jay Riggs, Board Member, Coach

This is my 2nd season as a Board Member, 3rd season coaching, and 4th season as a parent in the SBA organization. I have had the privilege to assistant coach several teams my son has been on and experience the amazing spiritual and athletic growth of so many kids at practices, games and tournaments. It is my great honor to see them develop as Christians, as athletes, and kids well equipped for the next stages of life.

Kel Riggs, Board Treasurer

This will be our family’s 4th season playing with the Shoreline Breakers.  My husband, Jay, and I have 2 sons.  We are each involved in different capacities, making this a full family activity.  We are grateful for the opportunity to have a solid basketball program for homeschooled girls and boys along the Lakeshore. The friendships that have developed and new experiences have been a true blessing.

Marcus Leman, Coach

I’m a father of four and always seek to instill the positive work ethic into my own children that I learned from my parents. Having grown up on the soccer field, the tennis court, and in the gym, I learned early that disciplined training of the fundamentals and a willingness to “do the work” make a winning combination. Coaching is more than just sport-specific training, it is the formation of life skills that can be used to serve God and those around us.

Daniel Hartley, Coach

I love the game of basketball and have been blessed to enjoy the past three years of coaching SBA, including two years as the head coach of the varsity team. I love the competition and the opportunity it provides to shape young athletes both on and off the court. One of my favorite Bible verses, 2 Timothy 2:15, reminds me of the importance of diligence and integrity. I strive to instill in every player. I believe in creating a purpose-driven team culture where excellence is the standard and love for teammates is shown through effort, sacrifice, and unity. My goal is to encourage each player to give their best not just for themselves, but for the good of the team.

Bear Dendel, Coach

Hi, I'm Ray “Bear” Dendel. I'm married to Sherrene and we have 2 children in the Breakers program. I've been around basketball most of my life, playing for the Kalamazoo homeschool program from about 11 through high school, then helping coach various church teams. For the last 3 seasons leading into this year, I have been coaching in the Breakers program in various roles. Outside of the Breakers, I'm heavily involved at church serving as a youth leader for over 20 years, as well as serving on various boards and serving on the tech team for over 30 years. God has developed me as a man and challenged me as I've lead the teams the last few years. My desire is to challenge the players as they grow, not only in basketball,  but in life. But also have them challenge me to grow deeper in my walk.

James Deeren, Coach

Hi I’m James Deeren and I am happy to have the opportunity to be the boys 10u coach. I’m married to my wife Emily and we have 3 awesome kids. I’ve always loved basketball and now getting to share that love with my son and the rest of the team is super fun for me. I’m looking forward to working with the boys this year.

Backdrop Jacob.png

Jacob Carpenter, Coach

I am the second oldest of ten siblings, which has shaped my leadership and team-first mindset. 2 of my younger brothers are on the Boys Varsity team which I  regularly practice with and assistant coach. Over the past few years, I have been actively involved with the Shoreline Breakers program as assistant coach for multiple teams. I try to bring energy, encouragement, and a commitment to helping players grow both on and off the court.

Isaiah Erb, Coach

I have played basketball since I was 4 years old. I played for the Shoreline Breakers for 6 years and now I am taking the next step and will be the assistant coach for the boys 16U team. I hope to make great and amazing relationships with the boys and hope that they make friends of their own. Basketball is fun but it is work. Coaching is more than just coaching, it is driving them to be better and do more than what they think they can do. God will give you the strength and power to help you. All you have to do is ask.
